If you haven't already, I recommend you take a look at the O'Reilly  
book on BEEP (written by the protocol's designer, Marshall Rose.) It  
covers the high-level aspects pretty well in the first few chapters  
(although the second half of the book is less interesting since it's  
all about using other APIs.)

The BEEP protocol specification [RFC 3080] goes into more detail, of  
course, and is cheaper to obtain :) It's actually extremely clearly  
written, for an RFC. Rose is a good writer.
